After the breakup of Ma Bell, the long distance phone industry set a standard for what they considered to be day, evening, and night/weekend time periods. However, this is no longer the case for many companies and calling plans. Time periods now range from plan to plan. Carriers now use different ways to identify when they offer their lowest rates. For most companies, this will be in the "night/weekend time" period. For others it may be in their "off-peak" time period. Becoming familiar with your calling plan's time periods, is an easy step toward saving money. If you are unsure, call your carrier's toll free customer service number.
Perhaps the biggest change in time periods has occurred on Sunday nights. While it was once common for companies to end their night/weekend period between 5 p.m. and 11 p.m. on Sundays, many phone companies are now carrying those rates straight through until Monday morning without interruption. Additionally, the starting hour for evening rates fluctuates among the phone carriers. Once you find out what hours are given the highest discount by your carrier, compare those to your calling patterns and decide if your current phone plan is in the fact the best one for you.
